All’ultimo minuto prima dell’inizio dell’NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship del Caesars Palace a Las Vegas Layne Flack è stato sostituito causa il fatto che è stato arrestato per guida in stato di ebbrezza dovuta alla sua partecipazione al party inaugurativo dell’evento al Caesars. È stato rilasciato la sera dopo ma non in tempo per partecipare alla competizione dove è stato sostituito da David Oppenheim.
Layne Flack è sempre stato un personaggio al centro di dibattiti infatti il successo nel poker l’ha portato all’uso di droga e alcool. Conosciuto dai tifosi come “Back-to-Back Flack” è arrivato addirittura ad accusare Doyle Brunson di essersi comprato il braccialetto quando a sfidarlo ai tavoli c’erano solo 8 players rispetto alle migliaia di adesso.
Ha passato la sua giovinezza nel Montana dove si è trasferito da piccolo con la famiglia ma è originario di Rapid City nel South Dakota. I giochi di carte erano molto amati in casa e quindi i suoi primi contatti con il mondo del poker avvennero molto presto. Una volta cresciuto torna nella sua città natia dove trova un lavoro come dealer nel locale casinò e ciò gli permette di iniziare a studiare meglio gli aspetti di questo gioco. Finito il lavoro andava nel casinò più vicino per giocare a poker con le mance ricevute e così facendo iniziò a pagarsi il college con i suoi guadagni. Impegnandosi a fondo, questo suo hobby divenne pian piano il suo nuovo lavoro e ciò lo portò a lasciare il college, trasferendosi a Reno così da essere più in prossimità di Las Vegas.
È un grande giocatore illeggibile secondo i suoi avversari di cui è difficilissimo capire le intenzioni ma possiede un carattere molto debole. Quest’ultima caratteristica forse può essere stata la causa che l’ha portato al consumo di ecstasy.
Ciò ha iniziato a influenzare anche la sua vita pokeristica e il suo gioco facendo preoccupare alcuni suoi amici e colleghi giocatori e portando, nel 2004, Daniel Negreanu a pagare $60,000 dollari per la riabilitazione di Flack che stava rischiando la vita, anche se per far ciò ha dovuto rendere pubblica la condizione del noto player. Tutti questi problemi non gli hanno comunque impedito di avere una delle più brillanti carriere in circolazione conseguendo i seguenti grandissimi risultati:
